Tellus is a comprehensive research programme dedicated to Earth systems science. Researchers at three different departments at the University of Gothenburg collaborate in order to gain a deeper knowledge and understanding of the functioning of the principal Earth systems, how they are interacting and how this affects life on Earth. As a framework for research Tellus is supported by the Faculty of Science at the University of Gothenburg.
In order to analyse, understand and find rational remedies to large-scale man-made environmental problems, Tellus has adopted a multidisciplinary Earth systems approach: tellurology. This holistic perspective, which brings together researchers from the Earth sciences, biology and chemistry, is the basic guiding principle for all research that is carried out at Tellus.
The organisational objective of Tellus is to provide a creative environment for Earth system science at the University of Gothenburg. In order to strengthen tellurology, a sub-goal of Tellus is to teach and develop tellurology as a scientific approach. This aim is advanced by PhD-courses and seminar series in co-operation with prominent international researchers.
Another important objective is to promote a better knowledge of the climate and environmental issues and a deeper understanding of the tellurological approach in the general public.
